Team "Gangnam Style" brought needed levity to "Dancing With the Stars," according to Kirstie Alley.
The "Gangnam Style" team dance led by Gilles Marini and Peta Murgatroyd was perhaps the most entertaining group dance ever on "Dancing With the Stars." Yet it only garnered 27 points compared to Monday’s Team "Call Me Maybe," led by Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough, which scored 29.5 points.
Originally, Hough wasn’t happy at all when he and Johnson drew "Call Me Maybe" as their team’s song. “I was like no!” he said. “But then we decided to make it work and have fun with it.”
Carrie Ann Inaba’s assessment of Team "Gangnam Style's" dance as being a “hot mess” was accurate. Modifications were being made to the routine up until the very end.
“I changed stuff on Gilles up until the day of,” revealed Murgatroyd.
“The group dance came together in the last minutes before the show, maybe 20 minutes before,” Marini said.
Still, Team "Gangnam Style" was arguably the bigger crowd pleaser.
“It was a godsend because it made everyone lighten up,” said Kirstie Alley. “I’d do that dance all day and all night.”
When she was shown being frustrated in the video package, Alley was cut off right before she could verbalize what she wanted to do to Maksim Chmerkovskiy, her tough pro partner. What were the next few words on her lips?
“Oh, (I was going to say) ‘murder him,’” Alley joked.
“It was a ‘pick on Maks’ moment,” Chmerkovskiy shot back.
As for the dance, despite not getting as many points as the other team, Marini has no complaints about what he and his competitors are achieving this season.
“This is what people out there (want to see),” Marini said. “They want to see the drama, the happiness, the fun and the performances. You have to give it your all. It’s the ‘All-Stars’ season. This is the season that will be remembered as the most incredible season ever. Whatever they do after this won’t be able to top it!”
