The violent acts viewers witnessed from “Teen Mom” star Amber Portwood, the same acts that led to felony charges against her, have been blown out of proportion, according to one family member.
“People are exaggerating the issue (of the aired ‘Teen Mom’ episode) and before MTV, the roles had been reversed,” Amber’s cousin, Krystal Portwood, told Radar Online.
Krystal then explained that she and others witnessed physical outbursts from Amber’s on-air victim and ex-fiancé, Gary Shirley.
"There had been times when Gary laid his hands on her,” Krystal said. “I remember when he shoved her against the wall and one-time he went over to a friend's house because Amber was over there and (their friend) Jessica pushed him over the balcony because he laid his hands on Amber.”
Still, even Amber’s defender wasn’t prepared to refer to Gary’s actions as abuse.
"He wasn't abusive to her, but he did lay his hands on her when they got in arguments sometimes,” Krystal claimed. “So it's gone both ways.”
Amber’s violent behavior toward Gary can be seen in this clip from the first season of MTV's "Teen Mom."
