Between team dances, a head-to-head dance off, a stage switcheroo and constant theme weeks, “Dancing With the Stars” has packed plenty of twists and unexpected turns this season. The ballroom battle has at least one more gimmick to go, but this time one celebrity and her professional partner have something to say about it.
“Scary, scary, and more scary,” Brandy told Entertainment Tonight about the upcoming last-minute-music twist.
On Monday night, the stars first face the usual well-rehearsed routine and then must follow it up with a second dance that they’ve practiced without the benefit of a tune. The music that goes along with the moves remains a mystery until minutes before the dance.
Brandy’s pro partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy thinks the challenge is one twist too far.
“Do we really need to not know what the hell we’re going to dance to?” Chmerkovskiy vented. “It’s like having a professional swimming competition and going, ‘Hey! This week, as a little twist, we’re going to throw you guys in the Jell-o. You’re going to swim in the Jell-o.”
It’s not Chmerkovskiy’s first rant on the subject. Last week, in his TV Guide blog, he said the twist would be “unfair to the celebrities” and not so great for the pros either.
“The format and changes are wearing on the professionals too,” the Ukrainian ballroom champ explained. “We are mentally drained and physically exhausted. I've been sick this entire season. I know they want to try new things and keep people on their toes, but I also think it will make for better TV if you can prepare properly. I'm a proud professional and I would never let myself come out with a mediocre product, but I'm going to give a hard thought about what I want to do.”
