Meteorologist Matt Hughes, who starred on the Discovery Channel's "Storm Chasers," passed away on May 26 in Wichita, Kan., and was remembered on the Nov. 3 episode. As Pop Eater noted, fans of the show learned of his death only after the episode aired. The documentary program follows teams of storm chasers as they track down and go inside twisters.
In the episode, titled "Dedication," the 30-year-old led the team to what Discovery called "their best tornado intercept ever."
A blog post from June on one of Wichita's news sites says that Hughes "was taken to the hospital after trying to take his life. ... Matt was in the hospital for several days in intensive care," wrote KAKE-TV's meteorologist Aaron Blaser. He also revealed that the storm chaser suffered from depression.
Hughes is survived by his wife and two sons.
